Hi my name is Becca and I have a problem

December 17th, 2007 at 05:34 pm

Ok I'm here. After checking out this site, I figured it would probably be good for me to have this blog. I see how it's helped everyone else and for me, I think I really need to put things in writing to put it into perspective.

We have debt. Let me rephrase that, we have A LOT of debt. It was never our intentions to have this happen, it just kinda did. We use to be very good at our spending. I don't know what happend. I don't know if we got lazy or what?! We bought a brand new house in Aug 2006....3bd/2ba since we had the new baby. Great stuff! We used the c.cs to buy the stuff we didn't have moving from an apartment. We did great by paying off everything with our taxes this year. Totally debt free in regards to credit cards. Now almost a year later we've racked them up something crazy. Credit cards alone are about $30,000. I know...I know...I'm so ashamed. That's why I'm here. I'm here to get back to my old ways! I really am glad that I found this site. Great people and great advice!

I'm making a promise to myself. I'm going to post on here to track progress. I just have to. Ok, well I'm going to go so I can get my stuff together to make my first budget post. Please, if anyone has any advice at anytime don't hesitate to tell me....I need to be smacked around a lil'....oh and before you tell me, the c.cs are put away.

Good, just put them away and don't charge any more. Now, let's get them all paid off as quickly as possible. Do you have an emergency fund? You need to start that first thing!

It's normal to have an uptick in expenses up to a year after buying a house. It's tempting to put Home Depot or Lowe's as a dependent on the 1040.

This isn't a "smackdown/toughlove" kind of place. It's a "I've been there" or "we're cheering for you" online community. I'm glad you're here and hope you stay.

Welcome and congratulations on taking a first step! It may take time to be where you want to be, but be patient and work on your goals. You can do it as long as you're determine to achieve your goal.

Yes, welcome Becca! Good on you for recognizing the spot you've gotten in and now to track back away from. You've landed in a VERY GOOD place!

Starting tip: Start making spending plans and put them down on paper or computer somewhere. No more 'fudgy' numbers in the head space. Get it down where you can see it all in black and white.

Take 75% of monthly income and budget that. The remaning 25% can be used as you go through the month for those unexpected expense that you should have foreseen. Also, I budget monthly and and funde the categories when I get my paycheck and tweak as I go.

Good luck. I'm new to this too. Just put together my first budget 3 weeks ago. The 25% really helped me (I forgot to budget a christmas tree).

Anyway, a lot of people here to help.

Welcome. I'm really curious. You moved into the home, charged a bunch of stuff and paid it off with your tax refund. Which is great, by the way. THEN, you proceeded to run up another $30,000 in CC debt. What was that for? Where did that money go? What do you have to show for it? If you don't have a quick answer to that question, I'd suggest finding out. Sit down with the monthly statements to review where the money was spent. I think that might help you see where you've gone off track so that you have a better idea of what to do going forward.

Dh and I have been budgeting seriously for about 1 year. In the past, we've always said, "oh, we'll just spend less this month." You know how that goes. For the past year, we've made LOTS of changes to reduce our spending, but the best things we did were make a monthly budget ahead of time and track ALL our spending. I'm the kind of person that if it doesn't work the first time, I usually quit, but this time I stuck with it. I changed the budget here and there to suit our needs, and finally one year later feel comfortable with our method. For one year now, I have written down EVERY expense we've incurred. It's a lot of work, but it's the only way things improved and continue to get better all the time. Good Luck!
