Credit Card Math

June 29th, 2008 at 11:42 pm

Today was just a plain ol' Sunday. It was also a NSD and a no gas day. While DS was down for a nap I sat down with each of the credit cards and wrote down minimum payments and finance charges just to see what actually went to the balance. It wasn't surprising to me how little actually goes to it, but I just wanted to have an idea. So far on my debt ticker, all of those payments posted have been additional. Anyways, I made a spreadsheet of each credit card, the balance, the minimum payment, and how much the finance charge is. This should help us in figuring out how much extra payment we can afford and how much it will help. I know the finance charges will change, but as long as I have them at the highest point possible(because we aren't using them anymore) it will keep us making higher payments thus more going towards the actual balance. Hopefully we'll be able to get this knocked out soon.

Well I better get off here....looks like we're finally going to get some needed rain. What it looks like at my house:

Seems like it's been stormy everywhere today. The spreadsheet sounds like it was a good idea, I know I always like to have things broken down and written out!

I have just gone through debt settlement with my credit cards, I'm down to the last one and they are offering me 0% financing for 60 months. I started with $135,000 in credit card debt in December; it has been a lot of sleepless nights and nerve wracking days, but I just have this last card to deal with and I need to decide if I should settle it or take the plan. I think I'll take the plan since settling will clean out our emergency fund and we have plenty of those lately.
